None of us knows how much time we have left on planet earth, and even if we did know, that knowledge would not improve the quality of our life. We would spend our time counting down the days until we checked out from this world and were promoted into the next.
When we sailed across the Pacific Ocean the first time, Team Exit Only had an awesome 9 month adventure. Several weeks after arriving in New Zealand, I was involved in a serious car accident that nearly took my life. If I had known that pain and suffering were waiting for me in New Zealand, it would have been difficult to enjoy those nine months of sailing through paradise. My days would have been a countdown to disaster and despair. God in his mercy doesn't let us see into the future, and instead, He gives us one day at a time, and I am glad that He does.
My job is to be totally immersed in the moment and to not worry about what might happen in the future.
In a world of uncetainty, one thing that is clear - you gotta keep going until you are all used up.
The thread of life is very thin and easily broken, and for many people the thread is way too short.
The most positive person I have ever known never lived to see his 50th birthday, but he still managed to cram massive adventures into his short life before he was all used up.
I like people who are doers of dreams, who never stop doing until they are all used up.
There are people who have circumnavigated planet earth in a sailboat eight times, and still they sail on, because they are not all used up.
I know octagenarians who consider the word "quit" to be a four letter word that will never cross their lips.
My grandfather lived to be 99 years old, and he did not stop farming until he was 83.
I have been a student, a doctor, a physician working in Africa, an eye surgeon, a retina surgeon in Arabia, a laser surgeon, a desert explorer, a flying doctor in the Indian Health Service, a circumnavigator on my own sailboat, a podcaster, a writer, an author of 12 books, a photographer, web designer, and creator of the Positive Thinking Network.
I have lived in America, Kenya, Saudi Arabia, Australia, New Zealand, Panama, and Puerto Rico, and I have visited dozens of countries as we circumanvigated on our catamaran.
I am in the seventh decade of my life, and I am deciding what adventure I want to do next.
I will do my best to make a positive difference in the world with more than than 200 positive websites that I created on the Positive Thinking Network.
I have three Land Rover Defenders, and God willing, I will drive one of these adventure machines around the world.
Exit Only has had a total refit, and with a couple days of routine maintenance, my catamaran can set sail once again for New Zealand, Australia, or even Zanzibar.
When I was young, I tried to figure out how much to bet on the next throw of the dice. Now that I am older, I wonder how many throws of the dice I have left.
Life is way too short, and my modus operandi is to keep moving forward until I am all used up.
So far we successfully dodged the Covid bullet, and God willing, it won't be long before we begin another adventure.
It's been said that cats have nine lives, but as far as I am concerned, having nine lives is not nearly enough.
Since we only get one life, we need to make the best of it.
We have to keep going until we are all used up.
Captain Dave
Captain Ardell Lien is one of my heroes. At age 71, he completed a singlehanded circumnavigation in a 27 foot sailboat after undergoing a double organ transplant. He had a combined kidney and heart transplant, and after he recovered, he set sail on a Nor’sea 27 sailboat on a circumnavigation.
Jon Sanders did eleven solo circumnavigations completing his last circumnavigation at age 81. On his last sailing voyage, he collected water samples to detect microplastics in all of the southern oceans.
Marvin Creamer was 66 years old when he set out in his steel hulled 36 foot boat to perform a circumnavigation without using navigational instruments. He is proof that a GPS does not make you a navigator any more than a boat makes you a sailor.
Jeanne Socrates started serious ocean sailing at age 48, and at age 77, she completed a solo non-stop circumnavigation spending 339 days at sea. She sailed in a 39 foot sailboat south of all the great southern capes.
